Newcastle United have endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market while also grappling with uncertainty over Alexander Isak’s future – but a breakthrough may now be close.

The Magpies have until Monday’s deadline to strengthen their squad, with Isak’s situation casting a long shadow.

The Swedish striker has not featured for Eddie Howe’s side this season after withdrawing from the pre-season tour of the Far East with an injury, amid strong interest from Liverpool.

Newcastle have held crisis talks with the forward in a bid to convince him to remain at St James’ Park, with the latest meeting involving co-owner Jamie Reuben and a PIF delegation at Isak’s home.

The club want the Swedish striker to return to training and playing after his strike, with a new contract potentially on the table if he commits this season.

On the pitch, Newcastle remain winless after two Premier League games, despite a spirited second-half showing in Monday’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool.

Off the pitch, the club are working on alternatives should Isak leave

Wolves striker Jørgen Strand Larsen has emerged as a prime target.

An initial £50million offer was rejected by Wolves, who are attempting to tie the Norwegian down to an improved contract at Molineux.

However, according to Scott Wilson of The Northern Echo, Newcastle are preparing a renewed approach.

The latest talks between the two clubs are said to have been positive, and there is growing belief on Tyneside that a deal can be reached.

The Magpies are expected to increase their bid, with the addition of performance-related add-ons.

Should the package reach around £60million, Wolves are thought to be willing to sanction Larsen’s departure, handing Newcastle hope of finally landing a much-needed attacking reinforcement.
