Newcastle United is believed to hold an interest in Marc Guehi, dating back to last summer.

According to widespread reports, Eddie Howe’s side made a series of bids for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi last summer, with the most notable and widely reported offer being a club-record bid of £65 million guaranteed plus £5 million in add-ons, totaling £70 million.

This offer was made towards the end of the transfer window, around late August 2024, and represented Newcastle’s final attempt to secure Guehi before walking away.

The Magpies summer transfer window has been characterized by repeated disappointments, with several high-profile targets slipping through Eddie Howe’s fingers.

The club made presentations to representatives of Liam Delap, Mathias Cunha, Joao Pedro, and Dean Huijsen this summer, only to see all four opt for moves to Chelsea, Manchester United, and Real Madrid respectively.

The collapse of initial talks for Bryan Mbeumo, who demanded £250,000 per week, added to the Magpies’ growing list of missed opportunities.

We exclusively revealed Liverpool interest in March already.

And it seems that Newcastle are now accepting defeat in the Marc Guehi pursuit.

Newcastle reporter Liam Kennedy, reporting for Newcastle World, has revealed that the Geordie side have all but accepted that Guehi would prefer a move to Anfield over St James’ Park.

It is claimed that the club’s transfer approach is now shifting away from the Crystal Palace defender and towards alternative options in continental Europe.

The Magpies are determined to avoid being drawn into lengthy and complicated transfer negotiations – an experience they endured last summer when Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish remained steadfast in the face of Newcastle’s advances.

It is added that, despite ongoing admiration for Guehi, it is understood that the club has moved on to other targets.

Unless circumstances change dramatically, Kennedy asserts that it now considered unlikely that Newcastle will reignite their interest in the player, even as his contract at Selhurst Park enters its final year and his market value has dipped.

This can only come as good news for Liverpool, with the player clearly having Liverpool as his preferred destination as things stand.

We exclusively reported that the Anfield club is now in direct talks with the player, with talks dating back to at least March.
