Dan Burn hopes Alexander Isak will choose to stay with Newcastle United as he continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.

It emerged on Thursday that the forward has turned down Newcastle’s attempts to get him to commit his future to the club and is exploring his options to leave.

The Sweden international did not travel with the rest of the Magpies squad for a pre-season tour of Asia, with the club stating this was due to a minor thigh injury.

Newcastle have insisted for some time that they do not want to sell and have yet to receive an official bid for Isak, but Liverpool are now on standby to make a British record offer.

Isak, who scored 27 goals in 42 appearances for the club last season, still has three years remaining on his present deal, and reacting to developments, Burn is hoping his team-mate will remain at St James' Park.

“If we lost any player, it would upset a tight-knit group that’s been together for two or three years now,” he told Sky Sports News.

“Obviously any player that leaves, it doesn’t help, but from our point of view (we have to) just control what we can control.

At the moment we’re looking forward to getting Alex back when he’s fit.”

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer claimed his old club had made themselves look “ridiculous” by citing injury as the reason for Isak’s absence.

"It's ridiculous what Newcastle put out this morning to say he wasn't on the trip because of a slight thigh injury,” he told Betfair.

“If they thought people wouldn't see through that… it was disappointing.

I understand it's a very difficult situation for them, but it is what it is.

“Eddie Howe has to use all his persuasive powers to do what he can and try to make him stay at least one more year.

If that can't happen, then it is what it is.

“You have to get the very best deal for the football club and if someone is prepared to pay north of £150million, and if he really, really wants to go, you can't step in his way.

“Isak has been brilliant for Newcastle, helped us achieve our dream of winning a trophy and if there's no way whatsoever that he can be persuaded to stay at Newcastle, then they have to get the best deal possible and if someone's prepared to pay what they want, you have to say thank you and build for the future.
