Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have faced a challenging summer transfer window, despite the club ending their long wait for silverware and securing Champions League qualification once again.

The Magpies have already added Aaron Ramsdale, Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, and Malick Thiaw to their squad, but their focus remains firmly on signing a striker or potentially two.

That pursuit has proven to be their biggest struggle.

Compounding matters is Alexander Isak’s ongoing desire to leave the club before the September 1 transfer deadline.

Newcastle have already missed out on targets such as Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko, while bids for Yoane Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen have also been rejected.

Eddie Howe has made it clear, however, that Newcastle will not be left without a recognised striker, even if Isak departs before the window closes.

“I don’t think the club will allow that situation to happen,” Howe said.

“We certainly can’t go through the season with no recognised striker at the football club – and that’s no disrespect to Will Osula.

“I think he’s doing really well and he’s progressing really well, but he’s got limited experience in the Premier League, although I’m really happy with his career progression.

“But Alex at the moment would be the only striker we have with Premier League history of goals and appearances and starts, so we can’t leave ourselves in that position.”

Wolves turned down a second bid from Newcastle for Jorgen Strand Larsen, who netted a brace in Tuesday’s win over West Ham.

The Magpies improved their initial £50m offer to £55m earlier this week, but Wolves remain firm in their stance.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, a third approach from Newcastle United is also expected to be turned down.

Wolves are determined to keep hold of the Norway international, not only because of the limited time left in the transfer window to secure a replacement, but also due to the striker’s importance to their Premier League survival hopes.
