West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta shared a heartfelt message to supporters despite the club suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Chelsea.

The Hammers have endured a difficult start to the Premier League season, opening with a loss to Sunderland before West Ham were beaten by Chelsea on Friday (22 August).

Paqueta gave West Ham an early lead with a stunning long-range strike, but Joao Pedro equalised just six minutes later.

From that point, Chelsea took full control, with Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto, Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah all finding the net.

The Brazilian has faced uncertainty around his future as Paqueta was linked with a move away, even after he was cleared of spot-fixing allegations following an FA hearing.

In light of the clearance and ongoing speculation, the Brazilian responded after netting his first goal of the season despite the heavy loss.

Despite West Ham’s 5-1 defeat to Chelsea, Paqueta shared a message of faith and gratitude on Instagram, posting a caption that read:

“It’s about pointing to the one who deserves to be glorified and exalted regardless of the circumstances, God!”

His words drew plenty of support from fellow Brazilians in the Premier League, with Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes replying: “I love you” [translated from Portuguese], while Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz dropped heart emojis.

Chelsea’s Pedro, as well as Joelinton and Emerson Palmieri, were among the players to like the post, showing solidarity for the midfielder.

The Brazilian has faced constant speculation over his future during the summer, but vice-chair Baroness Karren Brady told talkSPORT that the Paqueta is “happy to remain” at West Ham.

However, it remains to be seen if the club’s stance will change, with Saudi Arabian clubs and Manchester City both continuing to monitor his situation.

The midfielder endured a frustrating campaign last season, scoring just five goals and failing to register an assist across all competitions.

The club’s poor start has now seen them concede eight goals in just two games, and pressure is already beginning to mount on manager Potter.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier tipped Potter to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season.

The Hammers finished 14th last season and they have looked far from convincing in their opening fixtures.

The former Brighton boss has struggled to generate momentum in East London, and with frustrations over a quiet transfer window, scrutiny is only likely to intensify if results do not improve quickly.
