Newcastle United are overpaying to sign Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen after they submitted an improved bid for the striker.

The Magpies are in urgent need of a new centre-forward, following the departure of Callum Wilson earlier this summer, as well as the saga surrounding Alexander Isak.

Wolves rejected Newcastle’s first bid of £50million for Strand Larsen on Monday (25 August), and have now turned down an improved offer of £55m (BBC).

Football Insider revealed that Vitor Pereira’s side have set a £60m price tag on the 25-year-old, and are standing strong on their valuation.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Strand Larsen is not worth the fee that Wolves are demanding for him.

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Strand Larsen is simply a backup option for Eddie Howe’s side if they are unable to get other deals over the line.

Newcastle are also interested in Yoane Wissa from Brentford, but face competition from Tottenham to land the 28-year-old’s signature.

Wyness added that Strand Larsen is only worth around £40m, and that the Magpies would be overpaying massively if they were to complete a deal.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There’s a big question mark in my mind about him, and I think £60m is too much.

“I would rather have seen it around about the £40m mark, plus bonuses.

“I do think there’s a question mark about whether he can really do it at that level.

I don’t expect him to go.”

Meanwhile, Isak could still play for Newcastle again if his transfer to Liverpool falls through, sources have told Football Insider.

The Swedish striker has made his desire to move to Anfield abundantly clear, with Newcastle fans furious at the way he has conducted himself.

Liverpool submitted an opening offer totalling £120million for the 24-year-old’s services, which was rejected by the Magpies, and have yet to return with an improved bid.

Sources say that if Isak’s switch to Merseyside doesn’t end up happening, then he still has a way back into the fold at St James’ Park, despite his actions.
