Newcastle are confronted by a frustrating new setback in their lengthy pursuit of Yoane Wissa from Brentford.

In recent memory, I don’t think we’ve seen a transfer window worse than the Magpies for a long time.

One begins to run out of fingers to count the number of targets they’ve missed out on: Joao Pedro who trotted to Stamford Bridge, James Trafford who snubbed Newcastle to return to his boyhood club Man City.

Liam Delap ended up at Chelsea as well, Hugo Ekitike is a Liverpool player despite the Reds still pursuing Alexander Isak, and Wissa’s former teammate Bryan Mbeumo went to Man United.

Most painful of all, it is looking increasingly more likely the Toon will miss out on Slovenian sensation Benjamin Sesko as he gets closer and closer to a move to Man United too.

And for the cherry on top, Eddie Howe’s plan to snap up Wissa from the Bees has been met with yet another hurdle.

Sources have told BBC Sport (6 August) that following “constructive talks” with head coach Keith Andrews, the Congolese has resumed training for the first time since he left the camp in Portugal on 21 July.

In addition, the 28-year-old was also part of Brentford’s Premier League media day on 5 August, a seemingly striking blow to the Magpies hopes of signing the forward.

Yet, BBC Sport understands that “Brentford will consider selling Wissa but value the forward at a figure significantly more than the £25million plus £5m offer” they first received from the Toon.

The number 11 is still eager to secure a move to the north east this summer as St James’ Park keep their doors open for his potential arrival, but the Bees surely wouldn’t have done filming and photography with him if they felt an exit was imminent or very likely.

There is still hope for Howe to get his man with the right offer, provided they don’t let him go like the rest of their summer targets.

Geordie fans are likely bracing themselves for the worst that yet another viable candidate goes amiss in a depressing transfer window thus far.

Genuinely, if the hierarchy fail to deliver on their lengthy pursuit of the former Lorient forward, questions have to be asked of who is calling the shots regarding recruitment.

With Isak seemingly convinced he can land a move to Liverpool, if the Magpies fail to sign Brentford’s number 11, they’d have to start the season with Willy Osula down the middle.

For a striker with such limited Premier League, let alone Champions League experience, St James’ Park can kiss goodbye to having a successful run in Europe next season.

However, if the black-and-white can defy the summer trend and seal the deal for Wissa, they would acquire a goal-hungry forward who dances between the lines.

As the Bees’ top-flight record goal scorer with 45 goals, his poaching and attacking intelligence are one of the finest in the division.

Newcastle have to raise their bid if they stand any chance of tempting him away from the Gtech’s grasp, to even start to improve an increasingly desperate situation.
