The dispute between Newcastle and its forward Alexander Isak has intensified, with the latter issuing a statement asserting that "promises have been broken" and that there is no path back into the Magpies' squad.

Isak is trying to forge a move from Newcastle this month; Liverpool is the player's likely destination.

He stated that he has "kept quiet" during the disagreement with his club, which has "allowed people to push their own version of events."

The statement concludes by stating that the relationship with the club is "broken," and that "change is in the best interests of everyone."

Newcastle swiftly responded on its website, denying that any such promises to allow Isak to depart this summer were ever given.

The club states it has its own terms for allowing Isak to make a move elsewhere, but these have not, and are unlikely to, be met this summer.

This latest development in the saga has done nothing to mend the rift between many fans and their player.

"Great response from the club," wrote one Chronicle Live reader

"Isak talks of promises, but a contract is a promise to play for that amount of time for the club

Another reader added: "The best response the club could make is to go out there, pay what ever it is that clubs want for 2 decent strikers on decent wages, and still let this lad sweat
