Newcastle could now look to take advantage of Everton’s failed attempts at signing Tyler Dibling this summer.

The Toffees made two bids for the England Under-19 international this summer, but Southampton are standing firm on their asking price of £45million plus £5m in bonuses, and a 25% sell-on clause [The Athletic].

Everton need new wingers after Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison’s loans expired this summer, but the Saints’ asking price is beyond what David Moyes’ side are looking to pay.

However, the Toffees’ loss could be the Magpies’ gain, as Eddie Howe and his side are also in the market for some new attackers this window.

Anthony Elanga joined from Nottingham Forest, but the North Eastern club have failed in their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Hugo Ekitike.

Few players shone for Southampton last season, as Russell Martin, Ivan Juric, and Simon Rusk all tried and failed to get the best out of a side that broke the record for the earliest a team has ever been relegated from the Premier League.

However, there were a few younger players who had their moments for the Saints.

Mateus Fernandes caught the eye of Aston Villa, Leeds, and West Ham, whilst Kamaldeen Sulemana shone when fit.

Mateus Fernandes is a man in-demand this summer.

The 19-year-old’s form ebbed and flowed, as expected for any player in his debut full senior season.

The Englishman is an exciting talent, and whilst the stats hardly leap off the page, four goals and two assists in all competitions were a decent showing for a teenager in a side that finished the season with 12 points.

Mick Brown told Football Insider exclusively on 26 June that Newcastle were interested in Dibling.

The Magpies have since pursued other targets, to no avail, and it would be no surprise if they revived their interest in the 19-year-old.

Capable of playing at right-wing, striker, as a number 10, and even in the centre of the park, Dibling‘s ability to cover several bases would make him a worthwhile signing on that basis alone.

Newcastle desperately need more cover heading into a campaign in which they will compete in four competitions.

And after failing to compete with the big boys for the big-name signings, altering their approach and targeting younger players with potentially huge resale value down the line may yield more dividends for the Magpies, in all senses.

An Everton on the up again would have been something of a threat but they are a club still more restricted on spending than Newcastle so this could finally be a battle Howe and company can win in the transfer window.
