Newcastle could sanction the sale of Alexander Isak this summer, with Liverpool in the driving seat to land the striker after he reportedly told the Magpies he wants to move on.

He helped fire Newcastle to a fifth-place Premier League finish last season after bagging 23 top flight goals, with the Magpies set to return to the Champions League when the new campaign gets underway.

Newcastle will begin the 2025/26 season with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday, August 16 after thumping the Villans 5-1 at St James’ Park on the opening weekend of the campaign two years ago.

The Magpies will then play in front of their home supporters for the first time on Monday, August 25 when they host Liverpool.

The mouthwatering clash will give the St James’ Park faithful the opportunity to see their side in league action on home soil for the first time since May.

But the thought of witnessing Isak in action for the visitors could prove too much for some fans to bear.

And Howe will be absolutely devastated if he has to instantly manage against a player who has enjoyed so much success under his guidance in the north east.

Howe was asked about Isak after Newcastle had been thumped 4-0 by Celtic in a pre-season friendly last weekend.

And the former Bournemouth manager said: “It's difficult for me to give 100 per cent clarity on any player.

He loves the players he plays with, the staff, the team and I've never had any issue with him.”

Isak has since been omitted from the Newcastle squad for the team’s pre-season tour to Asia, with the club putting the absence down to a “thigh injury.”

Liverpool will have to dig deep to land Isak, with any deal likely to cost the Reds around £150million.

The Anfield club reportedly made a £120m approach for the star before completing a deal to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.

And if the reigning Premier League champions could have Ekitike and Isak together in the same team, they would be one of the favourites to win the Champions League after lifting the European trophy under previous boss Jurgen Klopp in 2019.
