Newcastle looks to have identified a new striker who could potentially replace Alexander Isak - although the Magpies’ options might well be running out.

Isak is of course a target for Liverpool, although there is some doubt over whether the Reds will be able to get a deal done for him this summer.

A $146 million offer has already been turned down, and there are currently no plans for a new bid.

Darwin Nunez’s impending move to Saudi Arabia could potentially see Liverpool step things up, though, while Isak himself looks to be trying to force his way out of his current club, having been made to train alone this week, while he will also sit out Newcastle's two friendlies this weekend.

Although Isak does appear to be angling for a move to Anfield, he may not get his wish unless Newcastle finds a replacement for him first.

The Magpies have not had much luck when it comes to signing new players this summer, having already been beaten to the signings of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro by Chelsea, while Manchester United has managed to secure Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, despite Newcastle offering more money to RB Leipzig.

Eddie Howe’s side has identified a new target, though, with The Athletic reporting that Newcastle is considering a move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa.

The interest does appear to be in its very early stages, with no formal approach made for the 21-year-old and no guarantee that a move will happen, although he is a player liked by Newcastle.

Rather worryingly from a Liverpool perspective, though, Aghehowa is said to be high on a list which only has a “small number of options” that Newcastle is looking at in order to bolster its attack, which could put Isak’s potential exit into even more doubt.

Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen are also said to be options, although the former is not considered to be for sale by his current club.

Aghehowa scored 27 goals across 45 appearances for Porto last season, including a double against Manchester United during the group stage of the Europa League.

The Spanish international is under contract in Portugal until 2029, with a $117 million (€100M) release clause inserted in his deal.

Liverpool fans will be hoping Newcastle eventually signs a new striker or two, otherwise Isak looks as though he will be going nowhere.
