Wolves’ valuation of star striker Jorgen Strand Larsen has emerged as Newcastle push to sign him before the summer transfer window ends.

Newcastle are in need of new additions in attack with Alexander Isak demanding a move away from Tyneside amid interest from Liverpool.

Yoane Wissa wants to make the move to St James’ Park from Brentford, but under-pressure boss Howe is also demanding another forward to bolster his ranks after Callum Wilson recently left the club at the end of his contract.

Newcastle have been targeting Wolves’ Strand Larsen, who scored 14 goals in 34 Premier League appearances in last season after he had joined on loan from Celta Vigo.

Newcastle have now opened talks with Wolves over a move for Strand Larsen after he impressed against Man City in their first game of the new campaign, and a new development has emerged in the Tyneside club’s pursuit of his services.

Strand Larsen only joined Wolves permanently in July after the option to buy in his loan deal was met [Wolves], but a move away from Molineux now looks possible with the Magpies in desperate need of new striker signings.

A new report from the Express & Star (21 August) has revealed that it will take “a package worth at least £60million” for Wolves to even consider selling him, as they themselves are “desperate to keep hold” of the Norway international so late in the window.

Wolves would reportedly want to bring in two forwards as a replacement for Larsen if he was to leave, hence their resistance to sell him to Newcastle, while they will only hold negotiations if they believe they are getting closer to agreeing a fee for his services.

Football Insider verdict

Eddie Howe has looked into Strand Larsen’s background and character as Newcastle explore a move for his services, which he is absolutely right to do considering the club’s current situation with Isak.

Newcastle have struggled throughout the transfer window to land a number of their top targets, especially up-front, after previous links to Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, but this deal seems more realistic despite Wolves’ potential push-back.

Strand Larsen was obviously not their first-choice to bolster Howe’s forward line, but he would be a decent capture given his recent exploits in the Premier League and potential to improve even further at 25-years-old.

If Newcastle are serious about competing at the top of the Premier League once again this season, then they need to sign a proper centre-forward in Isak’s place, and the Norwegian seems a safe bet at this point, especially since they are running out of other realistic options.

It may seem desperate and slightly more than his real value, but the Magpies should stump up the right amount of cash to get a deal done as soon as possible so that Howe can call on a senior centre-forward to play rather than having to put Anthony Gordon out of position up-front.
