Newcastle United’s desperate hunt for attacking reinforcements has taken on an increasingly frantic tone as Eddie Howe’s side chase their latest £40 million target amid mounting pressure to secure a striker before the window slams shut.
The knock-on effect of the Magpies signing a striker could well push Alexander Isak further to Liverpool, although there is a general acceptance that the Swede’s future is not necessarily tied to who Newcastle manage (or don’t manage) to bring in.
The Geordie club’s summer has been one of frustration, with the club repeatedly watching their top targets slip through their fingers to Premier League rivals.
Hugo Ekitike chose Liverpool over Newcastle, while Liam Delap and Joao Pedro both opted for Chelsea instead of St?
James’ Park.
Bryan Mbeumo joined the exodus by selecting Manchester United and even goalkeeper James Trafford spurned Newcastle’s advances to return to Manchester City.
Now Craig Hope has revealed the summer could get worse for Eddie Howe before it gets better.
Benjamin Sesko, their latest target, now seems to be wanting Old Trafford over St James’ Park:
“Newcastle are continuing to pursue deals for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa,” the reporter wrote.
“However, the feeling inside the club is that Sesko is likely to go to Manchester United, which would be a huge frustration given they are so keen on the Slovenian.”
The report did have some silver-lining, with Hope claiming that Newcastle are now looking at Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz.
The 24-year-old forward has emerged as a £40 million target after a 2024/25 campaign that saw him score 11 goals in 36 appearances across all competitionsfor the Cottagers.
Muniz’s season included eight Premier League goals in just 31 appearances, despite sometimes playing as a substitute behind Raul Jimenez.
The continued transfer setbacks has left Eddie Howe frustrated during Newcastle’s pre-season tour.
With only Anthony Elanga signed so far this summer for £55 million, the club’s lack of activity stands in stark contrast to their ambitions of competing across multiple fronts in 2025/26.
Meanwhile, Alexander Isak has reportedly already reached an agreement in principle with Liverpool.
A six-year deal ready to be signed, according to Sky Germany.
Newcastle’s hunt for a striker is then a situation to keep an eye on if the transfer dominoes continue to fall after Liverpool’s sale of Luis Diaz.
