A move to Liverpool for Alexander Isak might not be out of the question this summer, if Newcastle United’s latest transfer activity if anything to go by.

The Reds confirmed their latest signing on Thursday, with Milos Kerkez arriving from Bournemouth.

The 21-year-old is the third major signing made by Liverpool so far this summer, following on from the acquisitions of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will complete his move from Valencia after agreeing a deal last year.

With over two months still remaining before the window closes, Liverpool looks likely to turn its attention to outgoings now.

With Jarell Quansah and Darwin Nunez among those looking set to depart, the Reds may be on the lookout for a new center-back and striker - and Isak’s name continues to be linked with the latter.

The Newcastle star is seen by many as the dream option to become the Reds’ new No.9, having finished second only to Mohamed Salah in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season.

Newcastle has shown little or no appetite for selling its prize asset, or at least not without a substantial offer on the table.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle is embarking on a $172 million spree after launching bids for Brighton forward Joao Pedro, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

All three players are said to be interested in moves to St James’ Park, although there is still work to be done before any of the deals can be finalized.

Among those bids, the $69M offer for Pedro might pique the interest of Liverpool

Nevertheless, it is a lot of money to be spending on a player who would only serve as backup to Isak if the Swede were to remain in the north-east, and might point to an expectation that Isak is destined to move on - whether it’s this summer or in the near future.

What’s more, the $172M spree is a bold play from a club that has had its PSR concerns in recent times, and that figure doesn’t take into account any push back from the players’ current clubs that might drive their values up.

Whether those offers have been made in the knowledge that there will be some big bids on the way for Isak remains to be seen, but Liverpool may well be watching on at developments at St James’ Park with interest.
