Senior Newcastle United players have attempted to convince Liverpool target Alexander Isak to remain at St James' Park, despite the forward's desire to leave the club this summer.

Isak, 25, was left out of Newcastle's squad for their pre-season tour to Southeast Asia last week after the club reported that he had a minor thigh injury.

However, it later emerged that the Sweden international wishes to explore opportunities elsewhere and is keen to quit the Magpies.

He has since been spotted training at former side, Real Sociedad, and appears to be pushing for a move away from Newcastle.

However, North East sources believe the offer to be closer to £100m.

It's added that Newcastle have tried to tie Isak down to an improved contract with a release clause included next summer, and have encouraged him to stay on Tyneside through his senior team-mates.

At this stage, it's unknown who the Newcastle players are in question, but it hasn't changed Isak's stance.

He is still determined to leave the Magpies and that has been made clear to the club by the player and his camp.

While Isak wants a move, Newcastle are determined to keep hold and have reiterated that he is not for sale.

Last season, he scored 27 goals in 42 matches across all competitions.

The Swede found the net when Newcastle beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final back in March, and has an impressive record against the Reds, grabbing four goals in six matches.

Liverpool have made no secret of their ambition this summer, having spent almost £300m on seven players.

Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman have all joined the Reds, while a £200,000 deal is close to being agreed with Salford City for Will Wright.

With the Reds now firming up their interest in Isak, they will need to eclipse the £400m barrier if they want to lure him away from Newcastle.
