Newcastle are reportedly plotting a ‘power play’ in the transfer market, amid Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak.

14's future does not hinge on their ongoing negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike.

Isak has been heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park in recent weeks, and Newcastle’s push to sign Ekitike raised questions about whether he could ultimately be on the move for a record-breaking fee.

However, Eddie Howe intends to play the prospect alongside Isak – and the higher powers on Tyneside are determined not to be backed into a corner where they feel that they must lose out on either striker.

Reports somewhat suggested that Liverpool had given the Magpies something of an ultimatum earlier this week by ruling that Isak was their top target and Ekitike would be pursued if the ex-Real Sociedad star was unavailable.

The Telegraph report that Newcastle have responded though with a ‘power play’ of their own.

Howe’s side have pressed on in their pursuit of Ekitike and feel that they have enjoyed ‘productive’ talks over the last 24 hours over a deal.

The Magpies hierarchy feel that Liverpool’s public pursuit of Isak has been a ‘blatant attempt to unsettle’ their forward, and they are keen to respond with a major sign of intent and sign one of the most sought-after strikers on the market.

Trending

Newcastle have been unfazed by a ‘threat’ from Liverpool that they would hijack their pursuit of Ekitike if they were not willing to negotiate a deal for Isak, and a second offer is in the pipeline after their opening bid was rejected over the weekend.

It is unclear whether the Reds will ultimately submit the £120million offer that they have prepared for Isak, and whether the forward will show any sign that he would rather head to Anfield than remain at St James’ Park.

The striker is said to have not told Newcastle that he is looking to leave the club over the coming weeks, but the sudden push from Liverpool may have been encouraged somewhere along the line – may that be directly or via his entourage.
