Liverpool’s opening bid for Alexander Isak has been rejected by Newcastle.
Isak is currently training with former club Real Sociedad after intimating his desire to explore possible opportunities away from Tyneside this summer.
He was left out by Eddie Howe’s side for their pre-season tour of Asia with what was described as a minor thigh injury before his bombshell move.
A switch to Anfield has not been discounted despite the Premier League champions’ recent signing of Hugo Ekitike as a clear alternative to Isak.
The Magpies initially lined up Ekitike as the Sweden international’s successor but lost out after the Reds agreed a £69 million deal with Eintracht Frankfurt.
However Liverpool’s initial offer for Isak has fallen below their valuation of £150M for last season’s leading scorer amid conflicting reports on the fee.
Figures in the region of £100M and £120M were cited in the opening gambit for the 25-year-old, who has been a long-term target of Arne Slot’s side.
Newcastle remain insistent that Isak is not for sale despite the prospect of his sale setting a new British transfer record if close to their asking price is met.
Meanwhile Liverpool have confirmed that Florian Wirtz has been assigned the no.7 shirt following Luis Diaz’s departure to Bayern Munich earlier this week.
Fellow summer recruit Ekitike will wear the no.22 while Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have been assigned numbers six and 30 respectively.
Of the new goalkeeping additions, Giorgi Mamardashvili will wear no.25 while Freddie Woodman takes no.28 and Armin Pesci is set to sport the no.41.
Two existing players have also switched their numbers with Conor Bradley moving from no.84 to no.12 while Trey Nyoni is now no.42 from no.98.
