Alexander Isak will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League opener at Aston Villa tomorrow.

There is no prospect of the striker featuring against Liverpool or Leeds United before the end of the month, despite Eddie Howe’s desire to have him involved.

Liverpool are pursuing Isak as their latest big-money signing, but their opening bid has already been rejected.

The Sweden international is understood to be keen on a move to Anfield and reportedly considers his career at St James’ Park to be over.

However, negotiations between the two clubs remain at a standstill, with no resolution in sight.

Manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that Isak is refusing to both play and train while the situation remains unresolved.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa, the Magpies boss said: “Alex’s situation has been unchanged for a while, and that will continue to be the case.”

He added: “I’ve had a great relationship with Alex?

I have to work really closely with the player to his benefit.”

“No, there has been no change, all my focus has been on training and Villa and the transfer front.”

Newcastle remain committed to their plan of signing two strikers before the transfer window closes – a move that could pave the way for Alexander Isak’s switch to Liverpool.

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa is expected to complete his move to St James’ Park next week.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos is back on Newcastle’s radar as they search for reinforcements amid Isak’s push to join Liverpool.

The 24-year-old, initially deemed an unlikely target, is now seen as a viable option, with PSG preferring a sale over a loan.

Ramos, who scored in the UEFA Super Cup win against Tottenham, has struggled for regular starts under Luis Enrique, making a move to St James’ Park potentially attractive.
