Newcastle fans are being called to honour the memory of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota by leading a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the start of the Magpies’ first home fixture of the 2025–26 Premier League season against Liverpool on Saturday, 23 August.

The initiative, coordinated by a Newcastle supporters’ group on social media, calls on all fans in attendance at St James’ Park to unite in song as a mark of respect for Jota’s life and legacy.

In a Facebook post addressed to Newcastle followers worldwide, the supporters’ group “Newcastle Supporters Worldwide” recalled how Liverpool fans paused to honour the late Christian Atsu during Newcastle’s visit to Anfield following Atsu’s passing a few years ago.

Drawing on that spirit of solidarity, the group urged Newcastle fans to replicate the gesture in tribute to Jota:

“A few years ago when Atsu died, We played Liverpool at home and they showed respect by signing YNWA,” the wrote.

“We now play Liverpool on our first home game of the season we are asking all fans in attendance against Liverpool to sing YNWA at the start of the game to show respect to Jota.”

“Share this to everyone you know who’s at the game on the 23rd of August.”

This campaign has been widely shared across fan forums and social platforms, with thousands of supporters pledging their voices to the tribute.

Funeral services for Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva took place in their native Portugal over the weekend following repatriation from Spain.

The brothers’ wake was held on Friday, 4 July at 8:00 am in the Capela da Ressurreição in São Cosme, where family, friends and fellow supporters gathered to pay their respects.

This will be followed on Saturday, 5 July with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am in the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the parish church in their hometown, as local authorities declared a municipal day of mourning and flags flew at half-mast across Gondomar.

Throughout both services, mourners laid wreaths, scarves and personal tributes in honor of Jota and André Silva’s memory.
