Newcastle United have been actively searching for a striker throughout the transfer window, having missed out on Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
Both players opted to join Chelsea after strong Premier League campaigns last season.
Their disappointment grew when Hugo Ekitike moved to Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt, followed by top target Benjamin Sesko choosing Manchester United.
The Magpies also had a £40million bid turned down for Brentford star Yoane Wissa.
Wissa has been on Newcastle’s shortlist all summer as a more affordable option.
After failing to secure either Sesko or Ekitike, Eddie Howe’s side have now shifted their focus to the 28-year-old.
Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen is attracting interest from Newcastle, while the club have also been linked with a move for Nicolas Jackson this summer.
Jackson will not be part of Chelsea’s squad for Friday night’s Premier League clash with West Ham United as he seeks a transfer solution.
“He is available but he is not going to be part of the squad,” Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.
“We have two strikers, two in that position and also something can happen before the transfer window closes.
“Christo (Nkunku) is with us but it’s the same answer as Nico.
The other two players are training apart looking for a solution.
“We’ll see.
