The 19 year old replaced rumoured Liverpool target Sven Botman in the 60th minute in a match where The Netherlands ran out comfortable 5-0 winners against Wales in the under 21 qualifiers for the Euros.

The player impressed during an initial six month loan spell in the Championship with Preston which saw him move there as part of the deal taking Ben Davies in the opposite direction.

After Preston requested his services for another season, it has been another promising couple of months for van den Berg and those who follow Liverpool’s loan entourage.

Whilst a central defender by trade, van den Berg has been excelling in a right wing back role this season where he has scored his first two professional goals.

The call up and now debut for his country is therefore just rewards for his development over the past 12 months.

The defender is hoping to be allowed to play in the Carabao Cup fourth round tie against Liverpool at Deepdale later this month.

It remains to be seen however if he will be granted permission by his parent club to play in that match.
