'No one remotely cared' - National media react as Liverpool supporters do something Jurgen Klopp hates

Liverpool enjoyed the penultimate home game of Jurgen Klopp's reign with an impressive 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott all scored as the Reds cemented their top-three finish and kept alive very faint hopes of winning the Premier League title.

It made for a memorable afternoon at Anfield.

And here's how the national media, and the ECHO's own Paul Gorst, viewed another entertaining day in the season for Klopp's side.

PAUL GORST: Flags spotted on Kop show what must be done by new regime at Liverpool immediately

Paul Joyce of The Times - and formerly of this parish - detailed how home supporters knowingly ignored the usual requests of Klopp.

"On a billboard across from the Kop, there is a giant picture of Klopp with the accompanying slogan: 'Some journeys live forever'," he says.

"As the sun shone down and with Champions League football next season secured along with the Carabao Cup trophy, the prevailing sense was that the final fortnight of his reign should be savoured and the moment simply enjoyed.

"Just after the midpoint of the opening half, the crowd launched into a rendition of the ditty Jurgen Is A Red, knowing that he hates when it is sung before the result is a foregone conclusion.

Liverpool were richly deserving of a win delivered by the recalled Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott."

The Telegraph's Chris Bascombe - also once of these parts - brought a bit of perspective to Liverpool's Premier League campaign.

"Salah was back to his best, Elliott reminded next manager Arne Slot of the young quality he is inheriting and the three-week aberration that cost the chance to win more trophies was cast aside," he pens.

"Klopp has been looking and sounding demob happy since the Premier League title was out of reach.

It was almost merciful when Ange Postecoglu removed the defender as part of a triple change after 61 minutes."

Finally, Paul Gorst of the ECHO believes supporters should now embrace the final days of what has been a joyous reign under Klopp.

"For a team now virtually assured of a third-place finish and Champions League football already back on the agenda for next season, there's a lot to be said for the last days of Klopp's time on Merseyside being an unashamedly fun experience," he says.

"Fans might have become accustomed to dreaming until the last knockings of the season under their manager but if there is little left to pursue now then at least it can be an enjoyable ride to the finish line.

"Klopp wore the demeanour of a sixth-former on the final day of term in what was a riotous Friday press conference and the hope was that such wild abandon would translate to the pitch as the team attempted to put right an abject April that had decisively ended treble dreams.

"If that was the aim of it all then he will consider it mission accomplished here as his team put the visiting Tottenham Hotspur to the sword with the kind of ruthlessness that has rarely been seen this season.
