Newcastle United have been eyeing up FC Porto’s Samu Omorodion as a potential Alexander Isak replacement, but the verdict of one pundit is not positive.

The Magpies have endured a terrible summer, missing out on the signings of James Trafford, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko.

The latter two have been particularly costly, with Liverpool pushing hard to sign star striker Alexander Isak, who has scored 44 goals in the Premier League alone over the last two seasons.

Eddie Howe has now been left searching for alternative solutions to his striker problem, which is only exacerbated by Callum Wilson’s departure at the end of his contract.

Omorodion could offer one such solution.

The 21-year-old Spain international is a very different striker to Isak, but finished second only to Viktor Gyokeres in the Primeira Liga Golden Boot race last season with 19 goals, netting another six in the Europa League.

However, former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchison — who turned out for the likes of Everton, Liverpool, West Ham and Sunderland during his playing days — has not been impressed with what he’s seen from Omorodion.

Hutchison believes the striker is too inconsistent for Newcastle, who should fix their attention on the likes of Ollie Watkins and Yoane Wissa — while even touting a bid for Morgan Gibbs-White, despite the attacking midfielder recently signing a new deal at Nottingham Forest.

“I’ve seen him loads mate, I’m not convinced,” the former Scotland international wrote on X in response to a comment accusing Omorodion of having a ‘bad attitude’.

Whoever Newcastle decide to go for, they must act fast.

The new Premier League season is just a week away, and Isak hasn’t been playing in pre-season due to the uncertainty around his future, so he wouldn’t be match fit even if he stayed.

That, of course, looks highly unlikely.

In fact, with Liverpool clearing house with some recent major sales, Isak’s move to Anfield looks inevitable and is likely already agreed — at least personally — according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

“Liverpool were waiting for Luis Diaz to go, now Diaz has gone,” he told Football Insider.

“Then they were waiting for Nunez to go, Nunez has gone to Al-Hilal for £46million.

“When you weigh everything up, when you’ve been in the game and you know how transfers work, you look at it, it was just a case of Diaz and Nunez going.

“The funds are there for Liverpool, and the wages aren’t going to be a problem.

“The wages have been agreed weeks ago, and talks have happened.

“I can’t see anything other than Alexander Isak being a Liverpool player, and I think without directly saying it, you can see he wants the move as well.”
