Man City supporters face a confusing final few weeks of the transfer window as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s situation takes a new twist.

The Italian international has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League, with Football Insider revealing that Man City joined the race alongside rivals Man United for the goalkeeper’s signature.

With Donnarumma facing an unprecedented situation at PSG, recently taking to social media to share his point of view on being pushed out of the Ligue 1 club, a move away appears set in stone this summer.

However, there are a lot of conflicting reports surrounding his situation ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, and City fans are keeping a close eye following the big-money signing of James Trafford.

Man City fans are worried for Trafford’s future at the Etihad, but new updates have been shared on Donnarumma’s future as speculation continues to swirl.

According to BBC Sport (13 August), while reports have stated that City already have an agreement in place for Donnarumma, sources close to the goalkeeper deny this and say they have “not spoken” to the club.

Sources from inside the Etihad have described talks with the 26-year-old as “speculation”, though the idea that the PSG man could end up one of Guardiola’s players has not been completely ruled out.

Football Insider verdict

With Trafford just signed from Burnley on a £27m deal [BBC Sport], Guardiola already has three goalkeepers to choose from, with Ederson and Stefan Ortega also available.

Of course, both are being strongly linked with moves away, Ortega to newly promoted Burnley and Ederson to Turkish giants Galatasaray, but neither have yet made a move this summer.

Having four shot-stoppers on the books heading into the 2025/26 campaign makes absolutely no sense, and also signing a goalkeeper who is useless with his feet also seems a strange decision.

There is no doubt that Donnarumma is one of the best shot-stoppers in world football, now boasting 74 caps for the Italy national team, winning three Ligue 1 titles and the Champions League.

However, it remains to be seen if he would fit the system under Guardiola, and that is a huge worry when the Citizens’ style of football depends so heavily on the person between the sticks.

With just a few weeks remaining until the summer transfer window slams shut, City are greeted with a number of difficult decisions, and Guardiola will ultimately have final say ahead of the new season.
