Nottingham Forest are closing in on a swoop for Rennes striker Arnaud Kalimuendo amid fierce competition for his signature from numerous Premier League rivals.

Nottingham Forest were massively impressive last season as they did the improbable and competed for Champions League football throughout the campaign before eventually finishing seventh in the Premier League.

Nuno Espirito Santo has had a busy summer at the helm so far regarding changes to his squad, with key winger Anthony Elanga leaving for Newcastle, while the Reds have moved to bring in the likes of Dan Ndoye from Bologna and Igor Jesus from Botafogo.

Forest moved to make a huge statement of intent recently as Morgan Gibbs-White penned a new contract despite looking set to join Spurs, and they could be about to seal another huge deal.

Kalimuendo, who netted 17 goals in 33 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennes last term, has been on the radar of numerous Premier League sides this summer ahead of a potential move, but they now look to be set to win the race for his services.

L’Equipe recently reported that Kalimuendo has refused a move to Leeds this summer amid interest in his services from Newcastle, with Brentford also believed to be in talks to sign him as a Yoane Wissa replacement [Mike McGrath, The Telegraph].

Brentford fans were delighted about their interest in Kalimuendo, but they now look to have been beaten to the punch by Forest, who are able to offer Europa League football to new signings this season.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed (14 August), via X, that Forest and Rennes have agreed on a €30million (£25.8m) transfer package for the 23-year-old, while personal terms have already been sorted, and so he could be making the move to the East Midlands very soon.

Football Insider verdict

Forest’s summer has been busy so far in terms of new signings, and they are clearly making an effort to bolster their forward line as they venture into European football this season.

Bologna frontman Ndoye is set to take Elanga’s vacated space on the right-wing, while Brazilian striker Jesus will provide competition to Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi, but Kalimuendo will be the man that Reds fans should be most excited about if he joins in the coming weeks.

The 23-year-old has been a regular in France’s age-group squads over the years, and even helped their Olympic football team to a silver medal at the Paris games last summer.

He has netted double figures for goals in each of his last two Ligue 1 seasons, and it is no coincidence that he is being tracked by top Premier League sides ahead of 2025/26.

He would likely line up as a centre-forward under Nuno if he was to join the City Ground outfit, but his impressive versatility means that he could also be deployed on either wing, and he is sure to want to excite Forest supporters if his move is confirmed soon.
