Nottingham Forest look set to miss out on a reunion with Matty Cash due to Aston Villa’s view on letting him leave the club so late in the summer transfer window.

Cash left Nottingham Forest in September 2020 to join the Villans, and he has been a regular at right-back in the Second City ever since that £14million [BBC] move.

The 28-year-old has featured over 180 times for the club in the last five years, but his form has been wavering somewhat in recent seasons, and a move away has been mooted this summer as a result.

Football Insider revealed in June that Villa are willing to sell Cash this summer, but his £100,000-a-week wages had been a stumbling block in negotiations, while former scout Mick Brown also told Football Insider last month that Unai Emery had given the green light for Cash to depart.

Nottingham Forest were believed to be eyeing Cash up to take him back to the City Ground as right-back cover, but a new development has now seemingly ruled out such a move materialising anytime soon.

The Telegraph (21 August) have reported that, despite links to Forest, it is understood that Aston Villa have no intention of selling Cash to their Midlands rivals in the final two weeks of the transfer window.

Basque boss Emery only has one other out-and-out option at right-back as it stands, in young Spaniard Andres Garcia, and so an exit for the Poland international looks to have been ruled out altogether with little time to replace him.

Forest have moved too late in the window to snap the 28-year-old up, and the same report states that they are now in talks with Sevilla over a deal to sign Spain Under-21 international wing-back Jose Angel Carmona instead.

Football Insider verdict

Cash struggled against Newcastle in Villa’s opening game of the new season on Saturday (16 August), but Emery has had to stick by him up to now due to a lack of other senior right-backs in his squad.

The 28-year-old has impressed at times over the years, but his performances over the last 18 months have dropped off to be largely inconsistent, and the club now need to sign another right-sided defender who can properly challenge him for his starting spot.

His current back-up Garcia played just 10 times for the club last season after a January move from Levante, and he is out injured right now, with the versatile Lamare Bogarde rotating with Cash in pre-season instead.

Football Insider revealed back in April that Villa want to sign a new right-back this summer, yet with very little time until the window shuts, they have hardly been linked to any major targets and will need to get a move on if they wish to bolster in that area, which they should.
