Nuno Espirito Santo has made a brave decision to leave one of his huge summer signings out of Nottingham Forest’s Europa League squad.

Nottingham Forest were a surprise package in the Premier League last season, coming seventh to secure European qualification.

Crystal Palace’s CAS ruling meant Nottingham Forest took the Eagles’ spot in the Europa League, and Santo has added 13 new players to bolster his squad.

As per The Athletic [3 September], Forest have been restricted to just a 22 man squad due to UEFA rules.

The Athletic state: “Teams are permitted to name up to 25 players in their ‘List A’ squads but Forest are automatically limited as they only have one ‘club-trained’ player (who was at the club for three or more years between the ages of 15 and 21) in Ryan Yates.

“UEFA require four such players to be named in squads, or they will be limited by the club’s deficit — in Forest’s case, they are three short so they can only have a 22-man squad.”

Therefore, Santo has had to axe Omari Hutchinson, whom Forest signed for £37.5million from Ipswich and former Premier League title winner and Arsenal loanee Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Whilst the likes of Hutchinson and Zinchenko will remain fresh from not having to play in Europe, not being able to include them in the Europa League squad is a blow to Santo.

Zinchenko was signed to cover at full-back, an area Forest are short in, so an injury in that position now would hit Santo hard in Europe.

Hutchinson has only made two brief substitute appearances for Forest so far, so the 21-year-old is perhaps a player for the future.

Forest though are equipped in forward areas, though Hutchinson will now be keen to impress and prove himself to Santo in the Premier League.
