Liverpool host Crystal Palace in the final Premier League match of the season, with the Reds ready to lift the title at long last.

Arne Slot’s side were confirmed English champions almost a month ago after a 5-1 win against Tottenham, with Liverpool looking to end the Premier League season with another three points at home to FA Cup winners Palace.

Having wrapped up the title so early, attention has already been shifted to the summer transfer window, with Liverpool closing in on Florian Wirtz in what could be a club-record transfer for the Merseyside giants.

And journalist David Ornstein has now provided an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of the Germany international from the Anfield touchline this afternoon.

Speaking on NBC Sports coverage of today’s game, the transfer expert shared that Liverpool are set to win the race to sign Wirtz, with the Reds expected to pay a club-record fee for the 22-year-old Bundesliga superstar.

With Don Hutchison recently noting how Arne Slot should use Wirtz, the attacking midfielder will be one of the most exciting Liverpool signings in recent years once the deal is confirmed, with an announcement potentially just days away.

Ornstein said when asked about Liverpool’s pursuit of Wirtz: “Florian Wirtz, the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker, it was assumed that he would go to Bayern Munich or to Manchester City, but it now looks like Liverpool are going to win the race.

“They are in an increasingly strong position because he wants to join them, and they’re ready to pay significant finances, it would be a club-record signing, and he’ll be the most expensive German player in history.”

As well as Wirtz, Ornstein touched on Liverpool’s interest in AFC Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, who could be the third player to join the Reds after Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, who is also close to moving to Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked with Kerkez for some time, with the 21-year-old left-back Slot’s first-choice option for the position this summer, and interest in the defender could be about to reach a new level in the coming days.

Ornstein said on Liverpool’s latest attempt to sign the Hungarian international: “Milos Kerkez of Bournemouth, the left-back, heavily linked with Liverpool, I think we can see that ramp up in the coming days.”
