Nuno Espirito Santo reveals Elliot Anderson's first emotion following England call-up

Sat 30 August 2025 8:30, UK

Elliot Anderson’s brilliant performances for Nottingham Forest have not gone unnoticed by England boss Thomas Tuchel.

The 22-year-old midfielder has dual nationality, also playing for Scotland at youth level, but appears to have set his heart on becoming a member of the Three Lions’ squad for the foreseeable future.

Tuchel looks to already have plans for Anderson, with his team preparing for World Cup qualification matches against Andorra and Serbia once the international break hits.

Since arriving at the City Ground from Newcastle United, he has become an integral part of Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side, notching two goals and seven assists in 44 games across all competitions.

While he has not single-handedly helped the Reds into Europe, he has played a significant role in achieving that goal, with his manager now revealing his reaction to his reward at international level.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference (29 August), Espirito Santo said: “Delighted, and the boy is buzzing.

For him and Morgan [Gibbs-White], it is a special and proud moment for us all.

“I have been checking, since 1996, we haven’t had two players in the England squad.

It says a lot about them and the improvement of the team.”

Anderson was a surprise absentee from the England squad in Tuchel’s first two international windows, but it appears that the former Chelsea boss has come to his senses over the midfielder.

Football Insider verdict

While Anderson’s call-up has been something to celebrate for the Reds, dark clouds have been hanging over Espirito Santo’s future at the City Ground this summer.

Football Insider understands that Evangelos Marinakis is set to hold crunch talks over the Forest manager, who has fallen out with the sporting director, Edu, behind the scenes.

Espirito Santo has been more than honest with his feelings about the club’s transfer dealings, with Douglas Luiz being announced as the latest arrival at the City Ground this summer.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Jose Mourinho would be open to the Forest job if it were to become available, though Espirito Santo remains relaxed over his future for now.

Having secured European football for the Reds last season, this would be an incredibly sad end to the 51-year-old’s reign, but Marinakis is not a figure to be messed with, clearly.

The Tricky Trees have a real chance of success next season, especially after so much movement in the transfer window, but sacking the current manager would likely just hit the reset button.
