Borussia Dortmund manager Nuri Sahin has revealed why he joined Liverpool in 2012 despite interest from several other clubs.
The ex-Turkish international was one of the best midfielders in his day when he joined Liverpool on loan in the summer of 2012.
Having excelled with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and winning the Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2011, Real Madrid signed Sahin on a six-year contract.
However, his time in Spain did not go according to plan, and after a year at the Santiago Bernabeu, Sahin was loaned to Liverpool.
The plan was for Sahin to spend the entire 2012/13 season on loan at Liverpool.
But despite a good start to his loan spell at Anfield, the midfielder left Liverpool halfway through it.
In his five-month spell at Liverpool, he managed to get three goals and three assists in 12 games.
After leaving Liverpool, Sahin admitted that, though he was never truly happy at Liverpool, he was happy that he got a chance to play with captain Steven Gerrard.
The former Liverpool no.
8 was a player that attracted several stars at Anfield and could have been a major reason Sahin signed for the Reds.
However, Sahin, who is now Borussia Dortmund manager has lifted the lid on the main reason he chose Liverpool.
What did Nuri Shain say?
Speaking to the media ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League game against Celtic, Sahin revealed that former Liverpool boss and current Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was a major factor in his decision to leave Real Madrid and come to Anfield.
Sahin remarked that he was looking forward to seeing a familiar face who he has “history” with in the opposing dugout at Signal Iduna Park.
“Of course [it will be nice to see him],” Sahin told TNT Sports (via Euro Sport).
“When you have a history together, even if it was a very short time that we worked together, but I enjoyed the training sessions with him.
“I enjoyed the idea of football that he had.
It was also the reason why I chose Liverpool back in the day, from many offers I had.
Sahin also paid homage to Rodgers and the work he is doing at Celtic.
“You can see it very well, even watching ten minutes of Celtic,” he added.
“You see the influence Brendan has on the team.
A very high experience with Liverpool, Celtic, Leicester, and now back at Celtic.
Looking forward to it.”
