Oliver Glasner’s future at Crystal Palace could become even more uncertain with the Eagles set to be beaten in the race for a signing by Premier League new-boys Sunderland.

Crystal Palace are currently in the midst of uncertain times as a club, with a decision from UEFA on their European fate looming and the likes of Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze each linked with moves away this summer.

Austrian boss Glasner recently admitted that he has not held talks to extend his Eagles contract beyond the end of the season and suggested that he and Guehi have the “same fate” in terms of being set to leave when their deals expire next summer.

He also bemoaned the club’s summer transfer business, which has so far only seen them sign Walter Benitez and Borna Sosa, saying: “We are quite passive.

We are short of numbers, we have to add players, especially with quality.”

It is clear that the Selhurst Park board need to be much busier with transfers to keep their man happy ahead of a huge season for the club on and off the pitch, but they now look to have suffered another setback that could push him closer to an exit.

Guehi’s potential exit to join Liverpool and their impending European campaign has seen Palace aim to bring in another centre-back this summer to bolster Glasner’s ranks.

Sky Sports Italy reporter Luca Bendoni revealed on Friday (8 August) that the Eagles are keen on a move to sign Getafe defender Omar Alderete, with Sunderland also interested.

28-year-old Alderete made 34 La Liga appearances for Getafe last term to help his side to a 13th-placed finish, and would undoubtedly be a stellar signing for any Premier League side looking to bring in a burly, aggressive centre-back who is also strong in the air.

Palace may not get the chance to sign him, however, with Bendoni updating his report on Saturday (9 August) to say that Sunderland are “closing in on a deal” to sign Alderete, while Sky Sports’ Keith Downie also stated that there are “discussions taking place” for the Paraguayan international to move to Selhurst Park.

It certainly looks as if the Black Cats have stolen a march on their new Premier League rivals, which will come as a blow to Palace, who should be able to attract players over a newly-promoted team, especially with European football on offer.

Glasner will undoubtedly be annoyed at another setback to contend with this summer, and a few more like this could see him walk away from Selhurst Park before his contract is even up next year.

The former Frankfurt boss is clearly getting restless at the constant talk around his best players potentially being set to leave and Palace’s UEFA situation, and it does feel like another huge setback would push him to leave the club despite their recent success.

Palace enjoyed a terrific 2024/25 campaign under Glasner as they won the FA Cup for the first time in their history, and Guehi was a key part of their success from centre-back with 44 appearances in all competitions.

Anfield certainly looks like his most likely destination if he is to leave Palace this summer, after Football Insider revealed in July that Liverpool are planning to offer Ben Doak in a player-plus-cash deal for Guehi, who is at the top of their centre-back targets list.

The Reds are still favourites to sign the 25-year-old this summer [The Telegraph], with Chelsea not targeting him, but if Palace want to keep the spine of their team and their head-coach at the club for the upcoming season, they must resist any bids for his signature.
