Liverpool have built a strong reputation for spotting and developing young talent.

It is part of the club’s DNA.

Supporters only need to look at the past few years for proof.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, now at Real Madrid, was given his first chance by Jurgen Klopp and grew into one of the best full-backs in Europe.

More recently, Rio Ngumoha announced himself in the Premier League with the winning goal against Newcastle United in the second gameweek of the season, showing that Liverpool continue to trust emerging players in big moments.

This culture makes it natural that Liverpool remain active in the hunt for the next big star.

The club has not shied away from competing with Europe’s elite for teenagers and early 20-somethings who can shape the future of the squad.

During the summer, one such winger from France became the subject of interest.

He had pace, skill, and the kind of direct style that fits the Liverpool blueprint.

But despite clear signs of admiration, a transfer never happened.

That player was Olympique Lyon attacker Malick Fofana.

And now, the 20-year-old has explained why he stayed put.

Speaking via Het Belang van Limburg, Fofana confirmed that Liverpool and Chelsea had made approaches.

“There was interest from those two clubs, but ultimately it wasn’t concrete enough,” he said.

The Belgian admitted that a transfer had crossed his mind, but regular minutes mattered more.

“I’ve thought about a transfer, but I think it’s more important now that I play a lot, and that has to happen at Lyon.”

“Because I still have progress to make.”

Reports in France suggested Lyon’s €50m price tag played a role in ending the pursuit, but Fofana stressed that his personal ambitions also guided the decision.

“Of course [dreams of starting at the World Cup], but I realise I still have a lot to prove.”

“I’ve already made progress, I’m now more decisive and more involved in the game.”

Even with the hype around him, the winger stayed grounded.

“Am I the rising star of De Rode Duivels

Well, I’m just a normal lad and I’m keeping my cool.”

“I don’t focus on the media either, I just do what I love to do: dribble and score.”

But the pursuit reflects a clear strategy: to keep chasing players who can grow into stars, just like Alexander-Arnold once did.
