Olympique Lyonnais star Rayan Cherki has officially confirmed his departure from the club, ending a six-year tenure that saw him rise from academy prodigy to Ligue 1 standout.
The 21-year-old playmaker made the emotional announcement following Lyon’s final match of the season against Angers, declaring: “I think that was my last game with Lyon.
Thanks to OL, the coach, the staff, the president, my teammates, and all people at the club”.
This marks the end of an era for the French-Algerian talent, whose €22.5 million (£19m) release clause has triggered a scramble among Europe’s elite clubs, with Liverpool positioned as strong contenders
Cherki’s departure closes a chapter that began when he debuted for Lyon at 16, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history.
This season, he delivered career-best numbers: 12 goals and 19 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions, cementing his status as Ligue 1’s most creative player (7.56 shot-creating actions per 90).
Liverpool’s interest in the Frenchman, first reported in December of last year, appears to be genuine.
The French attacker’s €22.5 million release clause-described as a “gentleman’s agreement”- adds further intrigue to the situation.
While Liverpool have secured the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong via release clauses, the fact that it is just a verbal agreement means OL owner John Textor could play hardball regardless.
And after Cherki confirmed his intention to leave, OL have now appeared to have confirmed his exit on social media.
The Ligue 1 side posted an video of an emotional Cherki saying goodbye to the fans at Groupama Stadium on Saturday night.
At potentially €22.5 million, Cherki represents one of summer 2025’s most cost-effective opportunities.
The clause, negotiated during his 2024 contract extension, reflects Lyon’s precarious finances and their need to sanctions.
It will be a transfer to watch this summer with Liverpool’s name clearly in the hat for the attacking midfielder
