Florian Wirtz is set to become the signing of the summer.

On the verge of completing a move to Liverpool worth up to £116m, it is worth getting to know the plyer behind the price tag.

Florian Wirtz rose up through the youth set-up at FC Koln before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2020.



A move that was seen as controversial at the time as the two clubs are fierce rivals.

After impressing upon his move to Leverkusen, Wirtz made his senior debut for the club in May 2020, becoming the youngest Leverkusen player to make his debut in the league.

On 6th June he scored against Bayern Munich, becoming the Bundesliga’s youngest goal scorer in history at 17 years and 34 days.

This record has since been broken by Youssoufa Moukoko who was 16 years and 28 days when he bagged his first goal.

However, it is one setback that could have ended it all for Florian Wirtz.

On 13th March 2022, Wirtz tore his anterior cruciate ligament, which meant he missed the rest of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season and saw him out of action for 10 months.

As a result, Wirtz also missed the 2022 World Cup, a devastating blow for the young man who had worked his way into Hansi Flick’s plans.

An injury that ends many players careers, but Florian Wirtz showed extreme determination and sacrifice to get back to the football pitch and has arguably played even better football since the injury.

At such a young age, that sort of injury can be heart-breaking as it can massively stall a player’s development, but Wirtz saw the light through the darkness and worked his way back into top-form for his club.

Characteristics that will suit him well at Liverpool, as determination and passion are often traits that encapsulates what it means to be a Liverpool player, and it is safe to say Wirtz has it in abundance.

In 2023/24 season, Florian Wirtz was crucial in Bayer Leverkusen’s record-shattering season, as they won their first ever Bundesliga title whilst remaining unbeaten throughout the entire league campaign.

He would later add another DFB Pokal trophy to the club’s cabinet that season, as well as helping his side reach a Europa League final.

Florian Wirtz remains a grounded individual thanks to his large family.

The German has nine siblings (four brothers, five sisters), with Florian Plettenberg for Sky Germany calling him ‘gentle, well educated and with a very good family in the background.
