Paul Merson has hammered Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson in The Daily Star.

The former Arsenal star has claimed that Liverpool star Henderson was wrong to take the penalty off Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin during England’s game against Romania.

The former Sunderland midfielder actually failed to successfully convert the spot kick in the friendly international.

Merson has also hammered the midfielder – who has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2011 when he joined from Sunderland for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £20 million – for not caring that he failed with the spot kick after the match.

The Sky Sports pundit wrote in The Daily Star: “Henderson was wrong to nick a penalty off Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the Romania game and made it worse with his interview afterwards.

“He said he wasn’t bothered it was saved. Well if you’re not bothered when you miss, don’t take it! It was like he wanted to send a message out saying: ‘I’m the senior player here!’

“But when you’ve played that many games for England you should be thinking of others and putting the team first.”

Merson added: “Henderson should be thinking of the team, not putting himself first. That was selfish. One hundred per cent.”

England head coach Gareth Southgate was not particularly pleased with Henderson either.

In fact, not many will have been impressed by the Liverpool star.

However, that is in the past now.

The Euro 2020 finals will start tonight, and England will play their first game this weekend.

It is important that the fans get behind the Three Lions’ team, including Henderson.

Henderson has had injury problems in recent weeks, but he remains an important figure in the team.

England will need the Liverpool star, as they go through the matches at the European Championship.
