Liverpool's pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak faces a significant obstacle as the Premier League club has firmly stated the player is not for sale. According to journalist David Ornstein, Newcastle has no intention to sell Isak and is instead eager to secure his contract renewal. Despite interest from Liverpool and Arsenal, Newcastle’s stance remains unchanged, and any transfer would require an extortionate fee potentially around £150 million, which would smash the current Premier League transfer record.
Isak, a 25-year-old Swedish international, has impressed this season, scoring 19 goals in all competitions and gaining recognition as one of the Premier League’s best centre-forwards. This summer, Liverpool is seeking a striker to replace Darwin Núñez, making Isak a top target. The player’s status was also enhanced recently when he scored against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, further increasing interest from the Reds.
However, Newcastle’s refusal to entertain offers below £150 million means Liverpool faces a steep financial challenge to secure his signature. This figure substantially exceeds previous record transfers such as Chelsea’s £115 million purchase of Moises Caicedo and Arsenal’s £105 million for Declan Rice. Arsenal, meanwhile, have shifted focus to Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, a more affordable option.
Ornstein sums up the situation: “The sale of Alexander Isak is not on the agenda for Newcastle. They want him to stay and would love for him to renew his contract. Many clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal are interested, but Newcastle don’t intend to open the door. Even if they could be tempted, the price would be extortionate.” Isak’s future this transfer window remains uncertain, hinging on his mindset when preseason training resumes, but for now, he is expected to remain at Newcastle.
