Jamie Carragher says he has an ‘overriding concern’ about Arne Slot becoming next Liverpool manager

Jamie Carragher has delivered his verdict on Arne Slot becoming the next Liverpool manager.

The Reds have been on the lookout for a new boss for over three months now, and it looks like they’re finally about to land Jurgen Klopp‘s successor.

Reports revealed earlier this week that Slot is the frontrunner for the Liverpool job and that he is keen to leave Feyenoord and make the move to Anfield.

The Dutchman confirmed that himself yesterday, admitting that he wants the job and the clubs are currently locked in negotiations to strike a deal.

It really does look like Slot is going to be the next Liverpool manager, which should be exciting if you’re a Reds fan.

However, Carragher seems a bit worried about the potential appointment.

Jamie Carragher shares ‘overriding concern’ about Liverpool-bound Arne Slot

It is very likely that Liverpool will have to endure a period of transition once Jurgen Klopp leaves the club this summer.

We saw what happened at Manchester United and Arsenal after Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger departed all those years ago.

Arne Slot, if he does become the new Liverpool manager, may find it difficult to fill Klopp’s shoes early on, and it will be interesting to see if FSG will give him the time he needs.

Jamie Carragher, however, doesn’t look like he has any time.

The former Liverpool defender has claimed that he wants the next Reds manager to come in and compete with Pep Guardiola straight away.

However, he is a bit worried that Slot will not be able to do that next season if he gets the job.

Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: “My overriding concern is this: does Slot move to England ready to take on Guardiola for the Premier League and Champions League?

“The new Liverpool manager must say from the outset he is here to win, not just compete. After the Klopp years, no-one at Liverpool has any appetite to hear about transitional periods, seasons of consolidation or the ‘minimum requirement’ of Champions League qualification.

“Klopp’s triumph was extinguishing moderate expectations, re-establishing Liverpool as a team to be feared.”

Jamie Carragher could start a worrying trend at Liverpool

No football fan would want to see a drop in standards from their club at any point, and Jamie Carragher is no different.

The pundit is desperate to see Liverpool maintain the standards that Jurgen Klopp has set, but with his comments above, he could be starting a worrying trend.

Carragher has now put some unnecessary pressure on Arne Slot before he has even got the job. It’s ludicrous to expect any manager to come to England for the first time ever and compete with Pep Guardiola for both, the Premier League and the Champions League.

We’re not saying Slot can’t do it, but it’s just such a huge ask.

Carragher’s comments could now be echoed by some members of the Liverpool fan base, and that could start the worrying trend of wanting a change at the helm too soon – David Moyes and Unai Emery both experienced that and lost their jobs.

Liverpool need to give time to Slot or anyone else who comes in. If they don’t, they could end up following the footsteps of Manchester United post-Sir Alex Ferguson.
