Jeff Stelling has given his honest thoughts on Jose Mourinho after his sacking by Fenerbahce amid the uncertainty over Russell Martin’s job at Rangers.

It has been a hugely disappointing start to life in Glasgow for the former Southampton boss following a winless run in the league and a calamitous Champions League qualification campaign.

Sources told Football Insider that after the 0-0 draw with Celtic (31 August), Rangers were not considering sacking Martin despite the poor performances of late.

Yet, one manager who is back on the market is the ex-Man United boss following his departure from Turkish outfit Fenerbahce.

Football Insider learnt that Mourinho could replace Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest, if the club decide to part ways with the Portuguese.

Given the obvious shaky nature of the Martin tenure, suggestions of the Special One heading to the Ibrox is certainly on the cards as presenter Stelling gave his opinion on the matter.

Speaking on talkSPORT (2 September), the former Sky Sports host gave his frank outlook on the Portuguese manager taking up a new coaching role.

Stelling touched on Mourinho’s current availability to pick up a new job whilst questioning his managerial knowhow late in his career, saying: “Jose, for me, look, you know, I mean, Jose has his good days and his bad days.

“But for me, I don’t really want to see that style of football.

It would be for certain clubs.

“And I could see him being back in the Premier League, I’ll be honest, you know?

When certain jobs come up, there’s no question owners are going to look at the name, Jose Mourinho.”

The former Real Madrid boss has spoken in interviews before about his love for the Scottish League and potentially managing in Glasgow one day (The Daily Mail).

Despite Ally McCoist being in favour, Stelling dismissed the possibility of the Gers appointing the ex-Chelsea head coach due to the club’s financial struggles, adding: “They [Rangers] couldn’t afford Jose.”

Football Insider verdict

Mourinho obviously presents himself as an option for the Rangers board to take over from Martin if things continue to go south in Glasgow.

However, with only 11 games under his belt at the Ibrox, it seems far too early for the hierarchy to make any rash decision over the former Saints manager.

The Gers are undergoing a serious project to restore them back to their usual glory as Scottish football is struggling in general.

Glasgow rivals Celtic are not faring much better either, suggesting that if Martin can quickly sort his side out over the international break there may still be an opportunity to catch up the Hoops.

Yet, there is a sour taste in the air at the club, particularly after the battering by Club Brugge across two legs, understandably making fans frustrated and embarrassed by how their club is performing.

Patience will need to be allowed to see if the Englishman, a man who once played for the club and knows it well, can get Rangers back on track.
