The Championship club have acquired former Premier League talent to strengthen their defence.
They have not had the most promising start to the season, losing their opening two fixtures, but signing a defender who used to ply his trade for Liverpool could turn their fortunes around.
The player in question is Ben Davies.
The 30-year-old defender signed for Liverpool on 1st February 2021 on a long-term contract for an initial reported feed of £500,000, plus £1.1 million in performance-related add-ons.
Davies arrived from Preston North End, and as part of the deal Liverpool sent Sepp van den Berg on loan to them for the rest of that season.
At the time, Liverpool were in the midst of a serious injury crisis in the defensive department, with midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho regularly appearing in the back-line as a temporary solution.
As a result, Davies was signed as squad depth but he did not go on to make an appearance for Liverpool.
He joined Sheffield United on loan for the 2021/22 season and then departed the club permanently for Rangers in the summer of 2022.
He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Birmingham City and featured 44 times in the club’s record-breaking title promotion season.
Now, Oxford United have announced the season-long loan signing of Ben Davies.
Speaking after signing for Oxford United, Ben Davies said:
“I’m delighted to be here.
I spoke to the head coach, and I got the feel that this is a football club which can take a step forward this year.”
“I felt this is a great chance for me to play championship football?
I’m really grateful for the opportunity the club have given me, and I will do everything to have a strong season.”
“I’ve played a lot of football, and I hope I can bring those experiences to the team
I’m really looking forward to getting started and helping the club achieve its ambitions.”
