Andy Robertson was judged to have fouled Danny Welbeck and the German midfielder converted from the spot, Liverpool return to the top

Sportsmail runs the rule over both teams' performances...

BRIGHTON (3-4-3):

Ryan - 6

A solid display from Mathew Ryan who could do nothing to prevent Diogo Jota's opener

Commanding and distributed well throughout. Couldn’t get across to prevent Jota from opening the scoring.

White - 6

Comfortable on the ball, stepped out from the back confidently and distributed well. Let Jota drift off him in the lead up to goal.

Dunk - 6

Dominant aerially and marshalled back three efficiently. Caught the wrong side of Salah but was rescued by VAR in first half.

Webster - 6

Adam Webster was fairly solid for Brighton but could have done better for Liverpool's goal

Communicated well on the left side of the back three. Was sold by Jota’s dummy before the Portuguese fired home.

Veltman - 6

The odd burst forward without threatening. Defended diligently and retained possession well.

Bissouma - 7

Unfortunate slip in the lead up to Liverpool’s opener. Kept possession well and worked tirelessly.

Gross -7

Pascal Gross was ice cold as he tucked away Brighton's vital equaliser from the penalty spot

Confidently struck home injury time penalty to rescue vital point for Brighton.

March - 6

Lively start and looked threatening up against Williams. Faded away and was marshalled well by Milner in the second half.

Connolly - 6

Spurned a massive opportunity inside 10 minutes when one-on-one with Alisson. Looked to have a negative effect on his confidence.

Welbeck - 7

Linked the play well and provided a physical presence, occupying both central defenders. Won late penalty showing good awareness to reach the ball before Robertson.

Maupay - 4

A bad day at the office for Neal Maupay who missed a first half penalty and went off injured

Missed target completely with first-half penalty and came off injured immediately after.

Substitutes:

Trossard 6 (replaced Maupay, 25) Showed glimpses of quality, faded away in the second half.

Lallana N/A (replaced Connolly 63) Only last seven minutes due to injury.

Jahanbakhsh 5 (replaced Lallana 70) Struggled to get involved when introduced.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3)

Alisson - 6

Soundly beaten from the spot by Gross with injury-time penalty. Communicated and distributed well throughout.

N. Williams - 5

Conceded penalty on Connolly. Regained composure but was withdrawn at half time. A tough afternoon.

Phillips - 7

Dominant aerially and a few brave blocks. Klopp will continue to be impressed by the defender’s performances in the first team.

Fabinho - 6

Slotted in seamlessly at centre back as in previous games. Struggled to contain with the lively Welbeck at times but was fairly untroubled.

Robertson - 6

Defensively solid and provided width on the left-hand side. Incisive pass into Salah in the build up to Liverpool’s opener. Conceded late penalty on Welbeck after VAR check.

Milner - 6

Moved into right back for the second half and dealt with the threat of March well, before coming off injured with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Wijnaldum - 6

Cool and confident in possession. Looked a lot more comfortable when Henderson was introduced at half time and was able to push slightly further forward.

Minamino - 5

Largely ineffective throughout, yet to really ignite his Liverpool career. Klopp will continue to show faith in the Japanese international.

Firmino - 6

A quieter afternoon. Linked well with Salah at times. Will be delighted to play full 90 minutes for the second consecutive game.

Jota - 8

Took goal very clinically with first real sight of the target. Proving to be an excellent acquisition for Liverpool.

Salah - 6

First-half goal chalked off by VAR for marginal offside call. Nice interplay with Jota for Liverpool’s opening goal. Withdrawn on 64 minutes.

Substitutes:

Henderson 6 (replaced N. Williams 45) Commanded well and kept Liverpool ticking over.

Mane 6 (replaced Salah 64) Goal ruled out by VAR for offside late on.

Jones 6 (replaced Milner 74) Slotted in comfortably at right back for the remaining quarter hour.
