Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the signing of Gini Wijnaldum on a three-year deal.

The Dutch midfielder became the centre of a transfer race with his decision to leave Liverpool on a free.

Barcelona were the favourites to sign him, but PSG trumped them by more than doubling their wage offer.

Wijnaldum’s move to the Parc des Princes was pretty much finalised on Monday. He’s signed a contract lasting until 2024, which will earn him around £8.6million per year.

Speaking about the move, the player said: “Signing for Paris Saint-Germain is a new challenge for me.

“I’m joining one of the best squads in Europe and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project.

“PSG have proved how good they are in recent years and I am convinced that together, with our supporters, we can go even further and higher.”

Wijnaldum will be aiming for domestic and European success in France. Managed by Mauricio Pochettino, the club will want to regain their Ligue 1 crown.

They finished second in 2020/21, just one point behind title winners Lille.

The French giants also reached the Champions League semi-final. They were beaten by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 4-1 on aggregate.

Wijnaldum becomes Pochettino’s first signing since taking over in January. The tactician will now have to find a suitable system for the 30-year-old alongside Marco Verratti in midfield.

Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye are also available in the position.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will now step up their search for a replacement. Plenty of players have been linked, from Sheffield United’s Sander Berge to Ajax starlet Ryan Gravenberch.

The most likely option is Brighton’s Yves Bissouma. He’s been one of their best players in the last two seasons and looks set to become a top six star.

Signing Bissouma would also continue Liverpool’s transfer policy. They have a history of turning solid players from smaller Premier League clubs into top performers.

Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane are prime examples, alongside Wijnaldum himself.

Bissouma will cost more than those players as his price tag has been set at between £30-40million.
