Bayern Munich may have got a slice of fortune during their Champions League clash with Chelsea.

The Bundesliga raced into a 2-0 lead during the first half thanks to a Trevoh Chalobah own goal and a penalty from Harry Kane, who started ahead of Nicolas Jackson who could have faced his parent club.

Cole Palmer netted an instant reply to the Kane penalty, to give the Blues hope going into half-time.

Palmer picked up an injury at West Ham and was only a substitute in Chelsea’s 2-2 against Brentford, but his return was welcomed here.

Kane won the penalty he converted after the referee adjudged Moises Caicedo to have brought down the striker inside the penalty area.

As per BBC Sport [17 September], Pat Nevin believed the referee was hesitant to make the call initially.

“That is very strange,” Nevin said.

“It looked like a penalty, but he didn’t give it right away.

He has let the play go on as if to wait for VAR and then he makes the call.”

Kane made no mistake from the spot sending goalkeeper Robert Sanchez the wrong way.

Caicedo felt he had to stop Kane advancing further into the penalty area, but the striker was too clever for the midfielder.

That moment unravelled much of Chelsea’s good defensive work beforehand.

Chalobah’s own goal showed some lack of defensive communication, but Sanchez had little to do in goal during the first half, with Bayern registering just one shot on target.

Palmer’s fine finish into the roof of the net showed the quality on the ball Chelsea do possess to hurt teams like Bayern Munich, though ultimately the German side were too strong during the first half.
