Liverpool secured their 20th top-flight title and second Premier League crown in emphatic fashion Sunday, thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at a jubilant Anfield to cap Arne Slot’s transformative debut season.

The Reds needed only a draw to mathematically secure the championship but delivered a statement performance instead.

The victory extended Liverpool’s unbeaten league run to 19 matches, with Slot’s side conceding just 24 goals all season so far – the Premier League’s stoutest defense.

While red smoke and choruses of Allez Allez Allez filled Merseyside’s streets during Monday’s victory parade, a pressing concern simmers behind the scenes: the unresolved contract status of defensive linchpin Ibrahima Konate, whose current deal enters its final year this summer.

The 25-year-old French international enjoyed his most consistent campaign since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, starting 26 league matches and making the position next to Virgil van Dijk his own:

Ibrahima Konate.

Despite his centrality, contract talks opened in October 2024 have reportedly stalled

It is believed Konate’s camp seeks £200,000 weekly.

Once considered a routine extension, Ibrahima Konaté’s contract renewal has become a source of uncertainty for Liverpool.

The 25-year-old’s negotiations have stalled, prompting growing speculation among fans and analysts about whether he will follow Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in committing his long-term future to Arne Slot’s project.

Back in October 2024, Fabrizio Romano reported that Konaté was “fully expected” to sign a new deal, highlighting advanced discussions and a strong mutual desire to continue the partnership

However, six months on, no agreement has been reached.

Despite Konaté’s standout season and his pivotal role in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, there has been “zero progress” in talks, with the defender now set to enter the final year of his contract this summer.

The lack of movement is increasingly concerning for Liverpool, especially with interest from clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid intensifying as his contract ticks down.

But according to Paul Joyce, the Anfield club want Konate to commit his future to the club, writing for the Times:

“While the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been sub-plots to the season, Konaté is also entering the final year of his contract.”

“Liverpool want him to commit, as Van Dijk and Salah have done, and the chance to win more silverware should be tempting for a player who has been linked with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.”

The uncertainty surrounding Konaté’s future is not lost on Liverpool’s hierarchy, especially after the drawn-out contract sagas this season.

There is a growing sense of urgency to resolve the situation before it becomes a distraction or, worse, leads to the club losing a cornerstone of their defense either for a reduced fee or on a free transfer.

Speaking after the title clinch, the Frenchman said on his contract:

“New deal

This is a conversation with the club, and we will see.”
