Newcastle United striker and Liverpool target Alexander Isak is seeking a move away from St.
James’ Park this summer.
The Reds have held a long-standing interest in the Sweden international, and that has not cooled despite the recent arrival of Hugo Ekitike.
Having sold Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich and Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal, Arne Slot’s forward line still appears light in depth ahead of the new season.
The Premier League champions had a £110million bid for Isak rejected by Eddie Howe’s side.
Newcastle’s pursuit of Benjamin Šeško looked set to pave the way for Isak’s departure, but the Slovenian’s decision to join Manchester United instead has forced the Magpies back to the drawing board.
Alexander Isak was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of the Far East, with the club citing a thigh injury.
However, it later emerged that the 25-year-old was instead recovering with his personal staff at former club Real Sociedad’s training facilities rather than on Tyneside.
This added further fuel to speculation that he is seeking a move before the transfer deadline.
The Times’ Paul Joyce has opened up on the current situation of the Isak deal between Newcastle and Liverpool, and compared it to the Coutinho transfer from Liverpool.
Joyce told Off The Ball: “I covered the Coutinho situation in 2017 when Barcelona first came and Klopp used to have this saying whereby, regardless of the length of the contract, we’ve all got a one-year agreement here so we give everything each season for one year and then if you want to come and leave, you come and tell us early enough after the season has ended, so we can get all our ducks in a row and we can help you move.
“People talk about player power, and Isak will get his way.
I still think the fee could be an issue.
“And I still think the fact that Newcastle don’t seem to be close to, and the fact that they need to get two strikers.
“They’re the impediments?
One is the fee, the other is Newcastle replacing him.”
