Manchester United went top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory at Burnley on Tuesday night – thanks largely to Paul Pogba. The Red Devils leapfrogged Liverpool, climbing above their rivals for the first time since the start of last season, as Pogba’s volley put them three-points clear at the top.
If there was a hint of luck about the goal, which deflected off Matthew Lowton and threw the legs of Nick Pope, then Pogba earned it with a fabulous display.
The Frenchman, who found himself out of the starting XI and linked with a move away not too long ago, was described as the ‘best player on the pitch’ by one of his fiercest critics Gary Neville.
Not even Man City, with their two games in hand, can go level with United on points after 17 matches this season – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men must surely be considered title contenders now. If not, their credentials will face the ultimate test when they face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
