Pedro Neto has promised to pledge Chelsea’s potential Club World Cup success to the late Diogo Jota.

The Blues secured their place in Sunday’s showpiece with a commanding 2-0 victory over Brazilian giants Fluminense, but it was Pedro Neto’s heartfelt dedication to his late friend Diogo Jota that captured the attention.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku secured the Blues’ passage to their third Club World Cup final.

The Portuguese winger had been granted compassionate leave following Jota’s tragic death last week.

Speaking after the semi-final victory, Neto made his intentions clear:

“It’s been really difficult in the last few days, and I just want to leave a message that this final is for him and his brother?

It’s a really tough time for me.”

“It’s difficult to speak about it but I hope I can do it for him.”

“I want to dedicate this final to him and his family and show my support in these difficult times for them.”

The pair formed a bond during their time at Wolverhampton Wanderers together.

When Jota moved to Liverpool in 2020, Neto remained at Wolves, but their friendship endured.

Both players represented Portugal in the recent UEFA Nations League triumph, where they celebrated together what would tragically be their final tournament as teammates.

Meanwhile, the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby has become a focal point for the outpouring of grief as players returned to work for the first time since attending Jota’s funeral in Portugal.

Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Conor Bradley were among the first players to arrive at the training ground, where they were greeted by floral tributes and messages from fans who had gathered to pay their respects.

A Diogo Jota mural also went live on Tuesday.

Liverpool’s city chaplain was reportedly on hand to provide support to players struggling with the emotional impact of returning to work without their teammate.

The club had delayed their pre-season start by four days to allow players and staff to attend the funeral, but the resumption of training remained a difficult milestone
