Virgil van Dijk's quality has forced Liverpool to be different than the rest of the Big Six in the Premier League.

Some would argue the role that Van Gaal has given Van Dijk for his national side is suboptimal, as it prevents the Netherlands from truly taking advantage of his unique one-on-one ability when defending tricky situations.

Guardiola has his unicorns, and Van Gaal has his tactical beliefs, but Klopp has something even better.

Liverpool's build-up game doesn't tend to suffer too much because of Van Dijk's right-footed ways, although Louis van Gaal deploys him differently at international level in order to navigate the puzzle.

The Dutch defender is right-footed, but plays on the left of Jürgen Klopp's centre-back pairing at Anfield, which makes him something of an outlier compared to his peers.

Van Gaal's usage of Van Dijk is interesting and it does allow the Netherlands to include a left-footed defender in Aké, but Jürgen Klopp appears unlikely to take inspiration from the idea on Merseyside.
