Pep Guardiola has claimed Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool team are the best side he's ever faced in his managerial career.

The Spaniard heaped huge praise on his German counterpart ahead of Manchester City's clash with Liverpool on Sunday by declaring that they are 'one of the strongest teams in the world' at this moment.

Guardiola has come up against some of the game's most formidable sides during his 11 years in management but Liverpool have proved to be his toughest opponent yet.

Liverpool won the Champions League but missed on the Premier League title by one point

‘For me as a manager, last season when we won the league, (Liverpool were) the best contender I ever faced in my career,' Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

'Right now they are one of the strongest teams in the world. We are going to try to follow the plan in this game.’

City pipped Liverpool to the Premier League title by a single point last season, with each side pushing the other to their very limits until the final day.

Klopp's Liverpool team eclipse Jose Mourinho's side that won 100 points in the 2011-12 season

While City went on to win the unprecedented domestic treble, Liverpool were crowned champions of Europe following their triumph over Tottenham in June's Champions League final.

Liverpool's title challenge stands out most prominently in Guardiola's mind, with the Spaniard coming up against Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid team that won a record-breaking 100 points in the 2011-12 season.

Guardiola has also battled with Diego Simeone's defensively stubborn Atletico Madrid team and has also competed against Klopp's Borussia Dortmund side with Bayern Munich.
