Xabi Alonso, like Steven Gerrard, was keen not to rush things.

Several clubs would have happily taken a chance on Alonso after his playing days came to an end purely on the basis of his footballing career, but the Spaniard knew that to make it long-term in coaching, he had to start off with the basics.

The obvious question would be whether or not Alonso could make a good Liverpool manager one day.

Gerrard did his apprenticeship with Liverpool's U18s before moving to Rangers and now Aston Villa.

He has also been linked with a move to Man City to work with Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff.

Gerrard always said he would do his coaching badges at Liverpool and then get into coaching early in his career, whereas Alonso is slightly different.

Alonso almost became manager of Borussia Mönchengladbach around a year ago, but that move ultimately did not happen and he decided to stay with Real Sociedad's B team.
