Former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders is in line to join Manchester City.

Lijnders left Anfield last summer alongside the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff and was swiftly appointed head coach of Red Bull Salzburg.

But the Dutchman has been out of work since his spell with the Austrian Bundesliga outfit was curtailed last December after just 28 games in charge.

However he could be set for a surprise switch to the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola prepares to replace his three key figures in his coaching staff.

Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez will leave east Manchester when their current deals expire while Carlos Vincens has taken the reins with Braga.

Lijjnders is one of several names under consideration with ex-Reds defender Kolo Toure, now a City youth coach at under-18 level, also in the running.

The 42-year-old would become the second popular coaching staff member to move, albeit indirectly, between Anfield and the Etihad during recent times.

Rodolfo Borrell left Liverpool in 2014 to become City’s academy technical director before stepping up as one of Guardiola’s deputies two years later.

Arne Slot’s side, meanwhile, have confirmed the departure of their assistant coach John Heitinga, who was appointed Ajax’s new manager on Saturday.
